Concept Note
Celebrating half a century of diplomatic relations between India and the Republic of Korea, the Korea Centre, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala in collaboration with the Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal University is organising an Emerging Korean Studies Scholar’s Conference. This event arrives at a crucial juncture of Korean Studies in India, spurred by a point of convergence of global transformation, bilateral momentum, and the rise of a new era in Korea’s geo-cultural identity. Korea’s rapid socio-cultural metamorphosis, especially its elevation as a geo-cultural powerhouse, is engendering unprecedented interest among the Indian academic community. This scholarly curiosity goes beyond Korea’s celebrated economic and technological achievements, delving into the complexities of its evolving cultural identity. At the same time, both nations are witnessing an ascent in their global significance amidst the uncertainties of the geo-political and geo-economic landscape. The Indo-Pacific region is particularly impacted by these shifts, with India and Korea emerging as influential players.
This multifaceted backdrop forms an apt context for nurturing a new generation of Korean Studies scholars in India, whose insights will greatly contribute to an Indian perspective on Korea, India-Korea bilateral relations and broader global issues. The proposed conference aims to create an engaging platform for these promising scholars. They will have the opportunity to present their research, engage in thoughtful discussions, and network with other academics and policy experts. This event also symbolically aligns with the 50th anniversary of India-Korea diplomatic relations, adding a layer of historical significance to the proceedings.
